Machu Picchu Regulations
The Peruvian authorities continuously update regulations for visiting Machu Picchu in order to ensure sustainable tourism, a quality experience for all visitors, and conservation of the precious site.
When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu? Find the answer in a month by month summary.
Timed Entry
Limited tickets are available for purchase with dedicated entry times (every hour between 6 AM and 2 PM). You can’t enter before the hour stated on your ticket, but you have a full hour after to enter. Only maximum 600 visitors may enter at each hourly interval.
Time limit
Visits are officially limited to maximum 4 hours, though this is currently not checked or enforced. This regulation aims to limit the number of visitors at any given time (no overcrowding) as well as minimize waiting times.
Designated circuit
Visitors must complete a designated circuit, in one direction only. Exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. In total there are now 4 different circuits. It’s important to note that there are no toilets available inside (though there are at entry and exit of the site, but this means that you wouldn’t be able to re-enter if you do exit to use the facilities).
You can, however, purchase a second entry ticket for same day or next day.
Prohibited
Some examples of items prohibited at Machu Picchu: selfie sticks, tripods, backpacks bigger than 40x35x20cm, baby cars, alcohol, single-use plastic, drones, heels. There is a place at the entrance where you may be able to leave any belongings (though we recommend simply not bringing them). Also it’s not permitted to smoke on site.
Guide
You can only visit Machu Picchu with an authorized guide, and with a maximum group number of 16. Papi’s Treks only works with registered guides for Machu Picchu visits. Your guide will be able to update you on any changes to the rules.
Photo ID
To enter Machu Picchu you must have a photo ID (passport) with you and the name must match that on the ticket. Tickets are non-refundable, changes to date and name may be possible depending on availability, and at an additional cost.
